Tooth Extraction

We make every attempt to save damaged teeth, but sometimes tooth extraction is the best option.

Dr. John M. Pinnix IV and Dr. George A. Betancourt, serving Gastonia, Ballantyne, and Charlotte, NC, go to great lengths to ensure your comfort.

And, when you are ready, the team at Advanced Dentistry of Blakeney can expertly restore your missing tooth to protect your future oral health.

What Signs Should I Look Out For?

The team at our Charlotte dental office can explain the symptoms to look out for, as well as give you the care you need. Seeking care as soon as you notice pain or symptoms like these may save your tooth:

  • Swelling of the gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Discharge or bleeding
  • Darkening tooth enamel

Tooth Extraction Can Be a Fresh Start

While we often take our teeth for granted, Dr. Pinnix and Dr. Betancourt know that most people are emotionally attached to their smiles. We will do whatever is possible to preserve them, such as root canal therapy or traditional crown placement. However, in some cases, a tooth becomes so decayed or damaged that it will require extraction.

We encourage our patients to use this as an opportunity for a fresh start. By removing a failing tooth, patients can start on the path toward rebuilding their oral health.

Looking for Gentle Tooth Extraction? Call for a Consultation

Personalized care is a cornerstone at Advanced Dentistry of Blakeney in Charlotte, NC. In addition to being highly trained and using state-of-the-art technology, our dentists take the extra time to get to know each and every patient.

Before we recommend tooth extraction, you will undergo a thorough evaluation with one of our dentists who will explore options to save your tooth. If we determine your tooth should be extracted, we will explain the process and, if you choose, also discuss options to replace the missing tooth. Our advanced training allows us to perform tooth extractions and all types of restorations, saving you a trip to an oral surgeon.

What to Expect During an Extraction

While each patient's care is unique, in general, your procedure will follow along these lines:
Although local anesthesia makes tooth extraction virtually painless, we also offer sedation.
Although local anesthesia makes tooth extraction virtually painless, we also offer sedation.

Local Anesthetic

Your dentist will ensure your comfort by administering a local anesthetic and, if requested, sedation. Each serves a different purpose. The anesthetic numbs the extraction site, while the sedation calms your mind and body.

Tooth Extraction

If the tooth is above the gum line, the dentist will simply loosen the tooth and lift it out. If the tooth is severely impacted, he may make incisions to remove it. In some cases, the tooth is broken up and removed in pieces.

Sutures

If needed, the doctor will place sutures in the extraction site to encourage healing. We may provide sterile gauze for the area as well.

Beginning the Recovery Process After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Recovery after wisdom teeth removal is typically fast and comfortable. Aiding your recovery is the formation of a protective blood clot in the extraction site, which you may initially protect with gauze.

However, if the blood clot is dislodged or fails to form, a painful condition called dry socket can occur. In the event that the blood clot becomes loose, revealing your extraction site before you're done healing, reach out to us immediately.

What Else Should I Know About Healing?

You can avoid dry socket and ease recovery with a few simple steps:

  • Refrain from using a straw for about a week, which can dislodge the blood clot and put you at risk of dry socket.
  • Avoid smoking and tobacco, which slows healing and increases the risk of developing dry socket.
  • Adjust your oral hygiene the first few days after extraction. Our dentists will give you specific instructions.
  • Reduce swelling by holding an ice pack on your cheek. This should be sufficient for a simple tooth extraction as swelling should be minimal.

Options to Consider To Restore Your Smile and Your Bite

Advanced Dentistry of Blakeney in Charlotte is equipped to provide comprehensive care on-site without having to send you to an oral surgeon. When we are extracting just one tooth, many of our patients consider either a dental implant-supported crown or a dental bridge to fill the gap. If you are having wisdom teeth extracted, they do not need to be replaced.

Implant in jaw

Implant-Supported Crown

A dental implant is a small post that is surgically inserted into the jaw, where it fuses with the bone and functions like the root of a tooth. Once the post has fused with the bone, we will attach a natural-looking and durable dental crown to restore your smile and oral health.

Bridge

Dental Bridge

A dental bridge is a versatile restoration. To replace one tooth, we design a three-tooth bridge. A piece called a pontic replaces the missing tooth itself. Two crowns are placed at either end of the bridge, then attached to neighboring teeth to hold the restoration in place.

Restoring Your Smile After Tooth Extraction

Nervous about what your smile may look like after extraction? Let us put you at ease. Modern dentistry offers many options to restore lost teeth, including crowns, bridges, and dentures.

Tooth Extraction FAQs

Q. Do I need a traditional restoration or implant-supported restoration after wisdom tooth removal?

A. No. If you are having wisdom teeth extracted, they do not need to be replaced. Unlike your other teeth, they don't perform a necessary function.

Q. What will my insurance cover during tooth extraction?

A. This answer will depend on your provider and your plan. Generally speaking, though, insurance will help with the cost of extractions and traditional restorations. They rarely, if ever, assist with sedation and dental implants.

Q. What happens if I need more than just a tooth extraction?

A. It's common for our Charlotte dentistry patients to have multiple dental problems at once, like gum disease, bone loss, and deeply decayed teeth. We can address all your concerns with custom, comprehensive full mouth reconstruction.
