Take a Look at How Implants Work

Together, a dental implant, abutment, and implant-supported crown make an excellent solution for a missing tooth.

Implants Are Recommended for Patients With:

Sufficient Jawbone Density

Dental implants must be placed in healthy bone tissue, so if you have experienced atrophy in your jaw, you may need to undergo a dental bone graft or sinus lift. Those who have suffered a small degree of atrophy may still qualify for All-on-4® implants without undergoing preparatory treatment.

No Unhealthy Habits Like Smoking

Smoking interferes with your body's ability to heal after surgery and can increase your risk of implant failure. Smokers must quit several months before the procedure to reduce their chance of complications.

Healthy Gums

Your gums play an essential role in the success of your implants. If you have periodontal disease, we will recommend treatment at our Charlotte office before placing your implants.

Good Overall Health

Uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune diseases, bleeding disorders, and other conditions can all affect your eligibility for dental implants. Make sure to discuss your full medical and dental history with our doctors during your initial consultation.

Implant Treatment Customized to Your Needs Types of Dental Implants

Traditional Dental Implants

Traditional dental implants can replace one tooth or multiple teeth at a time using implant-supported restorations. This treatment requires two surgical procedures—the first to place titanium implant posts, and the second to attach abutments. Once your jaw and gums have healed, our dentists will secure a custom implant-supported crown, bridge, or denture to complete your smile.

Ask About Traditional Implants

All-on-4 Dental Implants

The All-on-4 implant technique strategically places four titanium posts at calculated angles to support an entire denture. The procedure requires a single surgery to complete, and patients can receive a temporary set of dentures on the same day of surgery. Furthermore, All-on-4 implants do not need as much jawbone for placement as traditional implants, allowing patients who do not qualify for traditional treatment to experience the benefits of dental implants.

NobelPearl Implants

While titanium implants work well for most patients, we offer a metal-free alternative for those with metal allergies or extremely thin soft tissue. NobelPearl™ implants consist of a solid white zirconia post and a metal-free abutment. They are an ideal option for patients with aesthetic concerns who do not want any potential grayness or darkness to compromise the look of their smile around the gumline. Drs. Pinnix and Betancourt can determine whether NobelPearl dental implants are a good option during your consultation.

What Happens During Treatment With a Traditional Implant?

For the qualifying patients, our dentists can perform same-day implant placement and restoration, which can save you time and money in the long run. However, there are some situations where the traditional timeline will be more appropriate.

Both of our doctors have advanced training in sedation dentistry to make your experience as comfortable as possible.

Traditional Timeline

Both of our doctors have advanced training in sedation dentistry to make your experience as comfortable as possible.

Digital Smile Design

Our team performs all-digital scanning and treatment planning to create a digital model of your new smile. Digital smile design allows you to preview your results before you even begin your implant treatment.

Anesthesia & Sedation

After your initial consultation and any necessary preparatory procedures, we will schedule your surgery at our Charlotte dental office. Before the surgery, we will numb your mouth with anesthesia and provide any necessary sedation to keep you comfortable.

Implant Placement

To place the implants, one of our dentists will make small incisions in your gums and create small holes in your jawbone. We carefully insert the titanium posts into the jaw and close the area with sutures.

Temporary Restoration

In many procedures, such as those involving All-on-4 implants, our dentists can attach an abutment and restoration right away. However, traditional implants will require a healing period of four to six months before they can support a permanent restoration. We will provide a temporary restoration for you to wear in the meantime.

Healing Period

In the months following surgery, your jawbone will fuse around the implants in a process called osseointegration. The implants will essentially replace your tooth roots and become permanently embedded in your jaw. It is important to closely follow the dentist's post-surgical guidelines during this time to ensure successful osseointegration.

Final Restoration

When you have made a full recovery, Dr. Pinnix or Dr. Betancourt will attach your permanent crown, bridge, or denture to the implants. All of our restorations are custom-designed and made from high-quality materials such as tooth-colored porcelain ceramic.

Hear More About Sedation Dentistry From Dr. Pinnix and Dr. Betancourt

Drs. John Pinnix and George Betancourt offer sedation dentistry to help anxious patients relax. Many patients feel nervous in the dentist's chair, but Advanced Dentistry of Blakeney excels at helping patients feel comfortable. Maintaining Your New Smile Simple and Convenient Aftercare

Maintaining your newly restored smile is easy. Drs. Pinnix and Betancourt recommend you follow these simple tips...

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Brush twice and floss your teeth at least once each day with a non-abrasive toothpaste. You can use an oral irrigator (water flosser) to remove plaque and debris from hard-to-reach areas.

Attend Regular Dental Exams

Make sure to schedule and attend your biannual visits to our Charlotte practice for a professional check-up and cleaning.

Avoid Excessive Pressure

While implant-supported restorations are extremely sturdy, they can become damaged just like natural teeth. Refrain from chewing ice or opening packages with your teeth to avoid accidental damage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants

Does dental implant placement hurt?

No. You will be thoroughly numbed before any treatment begins. Our Charlotte dental practice also offers sedation options to help you remain completely comfortable throughout your treatment.

How long does it take to heal from dental implant surgery?

This will vary from patient to patient. Typically, it takes three to six months for implants to fuse to the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. After the implant has fused to the bone, patients receiving traditional implants will need a second surgery to place the abutment pieces, followed by a second, much shorter healing period.

How long will my restored smile last?

Implants and abutments are made of durable materials like titanium and zirconia, and are designed to last a lifetime with proper care. However, the restoration itself will wear over time and will eventually need to be replaced. With proper maintenance, your crown, bridge, or denture can last for 15 years or more.
